Dr. Conor Crawford awarded with DFG Walter Benjamin grant!

This project aims to use fragment-based drug discovery for the development of glycan sulfatase chemical probes to investigate gut symbionts in IBD.

We congratulate Conor on his successful application for the Walter Benjamin Program with his project “Fragment-based drug discovery of glycan sulfatase inhibitors and chemical probes for investigating gut symbionts in inflammatory bowel disease”.

This project aims to develop the first chemical probes for BT1636 3S-Gal, a glycan sulfatase that enables Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron to degrade mucin and drive gut colonization. Because BT1636 3S-Gal elevated activity is linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), selective inhibition may reduce mucin breakdown and inflammation.
