Dr. Daniel Roderer is Junior Group Leader at the Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie. Daniel’s group, “Structure and Mechanism of Microbiome-Driven Diseases”, uses cryo-electron microscopy, among other techniques, to elucidate molecular processes between bacteria in the gut microbiome and cells of the large intestine that may be part of a disease mechanism.
In the context of certain serious diseases, such as colorectal cancer, interactions develop between cancer cells and bacteria in the microbiome that can exacerbate or accelerate the progression of these diseases. The interactions between bacteria and cells are often mediated by protein complexes at the interface between the two organisms. A detailed understanding of these complexes is necessary to gain a deeper insight into the resulting diseases and to develop drug-based therapies. The interview is conducted in German.
