Fan schloss ihr Studium der Biologie an der Fudan-Universität in Shanghai mit einem B.Sc. ab. Anschließend arbeitete sie im Labor von Prof. Dr. Mike Goshe an der North Carolina State University und promovierte 2013 in Biochemie. Danach arbeitet Fan als Postdoc im Labor von Prof. Dr. Albert Heck (Utrecht, Niederlande).
Seit 2017 arbeitet Fan am Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) in Berlin als Gruppenleiterin für Strukturelle Interaktomik und Leiterin der Forschungsplattform Proteomik. Zusätzlich zu ihrer Position am FMP ist Fan auch zur Professorin für Strukturelle Interaktomik an der Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin berufen wurden.
